Common Tomato Problems

Tomato End Rot
The Symptoms: black, dark-sunken, mushy, moldy patches on the bottom of nearly ripe tomatoes!
Left untreated blossom end rot will cover almost half of the tomatoes on each plant, leading to a greatly reduced yield. The plants must be treated, because they will not recover on their own.
The Cure: Calcium! Adding lime enriches the soil with calcium, and is a good idea for the upcoming year. But if you see end rot now, you need something faster! Blossom end rot spray is liquid calcium that can be applied directly to the plant, even after you see damage. It will quickly correct the problem, and save the rest of your summer tomato crop!

Tomato Sunburn
Sunburn often affects tomatoes in July and August. Green tomatoes will show white spots on the exposed sides of the fruits when the weather gets really hot. There is no spray on cure, but the problem can be solved.
Make sure that the plants are well watered going into warm weather. Water deeply and less often, during the growing season, to encourage deep thick root growth. Deeply rooted plants will be more tolerant of extreme temperatures, and are less likely to become damaged. The damaged tomatoes will not repair, but the rest of the crop will be fine.
